Islanders take extra-inning win over McNeese State on Senior Day

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Lauren Dodson sent her fellow seniors out with a win on Senior Day after scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth as Texas A&M - Corpus Christi won a 2-1 game against McNeese State at Chapman Field. The team finishes the season with a 28-3 record in home games following the win.

The Islanders improved to 37-15 overall and have now won 20 games in Southland Conference play. The team currently sits in first place with a 20-7 league record. The Cowgirls fall to 23-24 on the year while moving to 13-11 in conference games.

Greta Cecchetti started the game and pitched into extra innings before giving way to Jordan Trujillo. Cecchetti pitched eight-plus innings, giving up just one run on five hits while walking three and striking out five batters. Trujillo picked up the win to improve to 14-6 after tossing one inning while giving up no hits or walks and striking out one batter.

After struggling to get runs early yesterday, it did not take the Islanders long to get on the board after plating a run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. After a leadoff strikeout, Hannah Schwarz singled and stole second followed by singles from Caley Jeter and Jamise Jackson to load the bases. Dodson came through with an RBI single to left field to make it 1-0.

McNeese State scored with two outs to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth while neither team could muster any runs over the next two innings to send it to the top of the ninth. McNeese threatened after getting two runners on with no outs as the Islanders brought in Trujillo to relieve Cecchetti after eight-plus innings of work. Trujillo was able to work out of the jam to send it to the bottom of the ninth.

In the deciding frame, Dodson started the inning with a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Sandy Schumann sacrifice bunt. That brought Cassie Redman to the plate on what would be the deciding play. After taking a ball to start the at-bat, Redman hit a ball back to the pitcher and beat the throw to first for a single as Dodson moved to third and came around to score as the throw from the pitcher sailed down the right field line for the winning run.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi totaled 10 hits in the game, with Lauren Sanders and Dodson picked up a pair of hits each. Schwarz, Jeter, Jackson, Schumann, Redman and Brittany Tucker had one hit each while Dodson had the only RBI in the game.

Before the game, seniors Kacie Smith, Brittany Tucker, Caley Jeter, Lauren Dodson and her husband, manager Ryan Dodson, along with Lauren Sanders were honored for their time with the Islanders Softball program.

With the upcoming bye week for the team, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will not play again until they travel to face UT Arlington on May 7th and 8th to end the regular season. Both teams currently have seven conference losses and the matchup could potentially be for the Southland Conference Regular Season Championship.

Before then, the Islanders will take a week to get some rest for players and heal any injuries before squaring off against the Lady Mavericks for a chance to win a conference title and earn the number one seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament in Huntsville during the second week of May.
