Islanders host Cowgirls in final home series of the year

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will play host to the McNeese State Cowgirls on Friday and Saturday in a three-game Southland Conference series at Chapman Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. while concluding the series with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday.

The Islanders come into the game with a 35-14 record and are currently 18-6 in the Southland Conference. McNeese State is 22-22 overall with a 12-9 mark in league contests.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi comes off of a doubleheader split against Houston Baptist in their final non-conference games of the year. The Cowgirls lost a 4-2 game in nine innings against nationally-ranked LSU at Cowgirl Diamond.

Hannah Schwarz is the Islanders top hitter with a .381 average and is tied for the team lead with two triples. Caley Jeter is hitting .338 with 10 doubles and a team-high 34 RBI. Kacie Smith is tied for the team lead with 34 RBI and a team-high five home runs. Lauren Sanders is second on the team with a .364 batting average.

In the circle, Greta Cecchetti leads the team with a 1.83 ERA to go along with a seven wins. Jordan Trujillo has a team-high 13 wins to go along with her 2.59 ERA while Vianca Pesina has 11 wins and a 2.20 ERA.

MSU is led in hitting by Katie Shumaker with a .337 batting average in 83 at-bats. Molly Guidry is second on the team with a .317 mark in 126 at-bats. Guidry leads the team with seven home runs and 32 RBI while being a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen bases. Claire Terracina has a Southland-leading 27 stolen bases while hitting .298 on the season.

Kayla Shepherd is 13-13 on the season with a 2.57 ERA to lead the Cowgirls in the circle. Meagan Bond is 8-7 with a 2.94 ERA.

Saturday will mark the final home game for five senior and will be Senior Day for two-year players Brittany Tucker, Lauren Dodson, Kacie Smith, Caley Jeter along with four-year Islanders player Lauren Sanders. The players will be honored before the start of the contest.

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting new shoes for children and families worldwide in partnership with Samaritan's Feet during the series. Fans are encouraged to bring a pair of new athletic shoes to these events to help the cause. A table will be set up near the entrance to Chapman Field for supporters wishing to contribute.
