Offense erupts for run-rule victory over Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team recovered from a sluggish offensive day on Saturday with a nine-run outburst on Sunday for a 9-0 run-rule victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Islanders improved to 34-13 overall and are now 18-6 in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston fell to 17-26 on the year with a 9-11 league mark.

Jordan Trujillo pitched a complete game shutout, giving up no runs on just three hits while walking none and striking out eight Bearkat batters to move to 13-5 on the season.

After scoring just two runs combined in the first two games of the series, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi put up three runs in the first inning as they took the lead for the first time in the series.

Hannah Schwarz led off the game with a bunt single and stole second ahead of a walk by Lauren Sanders to put runners on first and second. A Stephanie Vead single over the head of the first baseman loaded the bases, but a fielder's choice that allowed Cassie Redman to reach had Schwarz being put out at home.

With two outs in the inning, Lauren Dodson was not going to let another bases loaded opportunity get away as she took the first pitch and hit it to the right center field wall to clear the bases and give her team a 3-0 lead on a double.

The score remained the same until the top of the third when the offense put up another six runs to extend it to a 9-0 advantage.

Vead led off the third with a single down the left field line and moved to second on an infield single by Redman. Dodson reached on a fielder's choice as Vead was thrown out at third for the first out. That brought up Kacie Smith who hit the first pitch she saw to left center field for a three-run home run, her fifth of the season, to make it a 6-0 lead.

The Islanders were not done yet, as Sandy Schumann singled and was followed by a Brittany Tucker walk to put a pair of runners on with one out. After a fly out by Schwarz, Sanders walked to load the bases once again. Caley Jeter followed with yet another walk to make it a 7-0 game as Schumann came home to score.

That brought Vead to the plate for the second time in the game. She singled to right field to bring home Tucker and Sanders for a 9-0 lead before trying to advance to second and was thrown out to end the inning.

It would be all the runs they would need as Trujillo dominated the game from the circle to pick up her 13th win of the year.

Vead went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI while Dodson and Smith each had one hit and three RBI apiece. Schumann ended the game with two hits while Schwarz, Sanders and Redman had one hit each. Jeter had the other RBI in the game for the Islanders.

Next up will be a doubleheader on Wednesday at Houston Baptist. The teams will play at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the final non-conference games of the year.

Following the midweek contests, they will play a three-game series against McNeese State in the final home series of the season. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday with Sunday off for Easter. The Saturday game will also be Senior Day for the five Texas A&M - Corpus Christi seniors on the team. Tucker, Dodson, Smith, Jeter and Sanders will be playing their final home game of their Islanders careers.
