Islanders fall twice on the road against Sam Houston State
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team was unable to come up with any rhythm on offense on Saturday as they fell by 1-0 and 5-2 finals in a Southland Conference doubleheader against Sam Houston State. The two teams play the final game of the series beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
The Islanders move to 33-13 overall and 17-6 in Southland games while the Bearkats improved to 17-25 this season and are now 9-10 in league games.
Greta Cecchetti started game one and gave up just one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout, but she was tagged with the hard-luck loss to move to 7-4 as the offense was unable to score any runs. Vianca Pesina started game two and fell to 10-3 after giving up three runs on seven hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Constance Brandenburg came on in relief and gave up two runs, one of them earned, on two hits and one walk in two innings.
In game two, the Bearkats scored first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first on Tori Benavidez's first homer of the year for a 1-0 lead.
Sam Houston added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on two more in the sixth on a two-run home run by Erin Burford, her first of the season, to make it a 5-0 advantage.
The Islanders finally broke through in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on three hits with Sandy Schumann starting things off on a hustle single to the pitcher as she slid head first into the bag. She was eliminated from the base path on a Hannah Schwarz fielder's choice followed by a Lauren Sanders single down the left field line to put runners on first and second. Caley Jeter then had the only RBI of the day when she singled to right field to score Schwarz while Sanders came around to score when the ball got by the right fielder on an error that allowed Jeter to move all the way to third.
Kacie Smith followed by reaching on a fielder's choice while Jeter was back safe at third after getting caught in a rundown. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi looked to have a rally started with just one out and a Lauren Dodson walk to load the bases, but a popup and a groundout ended the game at 5-2.
Sanders led the team with a 3-for-4 game while Schwarz picked up two hits with Jeter, Cassie Redman and Schumann picking up one apiece. Jeter had the only RBI of the day for the Islanders.
In the first game, the Islanders offense was never able to get on track as they could never get more than one runner on in any inning. They had just two hits and did not draw a walk until the top of the seventh inning with two outs.
The best opportunity to score came in the fifth when Smith reached and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder to start the inning. A Dodson groundout moved Smith to third base with one out, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
