Softball travels to Sam Houston State for Southland weekend series

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will hit the road this weekend for a three-game Southland Conference series against the Sam Houston State Bearkats in Huntsville. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the final game set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday.

The Islanders head into the weekend with a 33-11 record overall and a 17-4 mark in league games. The Bearkats are 15-25 on the season with a 7-10 record in Southland games.

Last weekend Texas A&M - Corpus Christi won two-of-three against Stephen F. Austin while SHSU is 1-3 in its last four games. It lost two-of-three against McNeese State in their weekend series while falling by a 4-1 final against No. 20 Texas A&M on Wednesday evening.

Hannah Schwarz leads the team in batting with a .384 average while the team is hitting .299 overall. Lauren Sanders (.364), Caley Jeter (.344), Stephanie Vead (.321) and Lauren Dodson (.304) are also hitting above .300 on the team. Jeter and Kacie Smith are tied with 31 apiece for the team lead. Dodson is right behind the two with 29 RBI on the year.

Greta Cecchetti leads the team with a 1.98 ERA while Vianca Pesina (2.21) and Jordan Trujillo (2.70) also sport ERAs under three on the year. The team had an overall ERA of 2.67 with Trujillo leading the team in wins at 12.5 on the season. Pesina is second at 10-2, Cecchetti sits at 7-3 while Constance Brandenburg rounds out the quartet at 4-1 overall.

The Bearkats Kim Damian leads the offensive effort with a .410 batting average and is second on the team with 17 RBI. Hailey Wiginton has a team-high seven home runs while Sarah Allison is the team leader with 24 RBI on the year.

Tomi Garrison is the top pitcher with a 2.62 ERA and a 12-13 record in the circle. She has tossed 17 complete games and three shutouts as well as recording one save. She has started 20 of the Bearkats 4- games while Courtney Schoenemann started nine times this year. She has a 2-7 record with a 7.36 ERA during the season.
