Islanders fall in extra innings heartbreaker against Stephen F. Austin

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped a heartbreaking 5-3 loss in 10 innings against Stephen F. Austin in the final game of a Southland Conference series at Chapman field. The loss ended the 25-game home winning streak for the Islanders, which was the second-longest active streak in the nation.

They are now 33-11 overall and 17-4 in the Southland Conference following the loss. SFA is now 9-28 on the year and 5-13 in league games.

Jordan Trujillo pitched 8.1 innings as the starter, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on five hits and eight walks while striking out five batters. Constance Brandenburg came on in relief and absorbed the loss, pitching one inning and giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit with no walks and one strikeout for her first loss of the year at 4-1. Greta Cecchetti also pitched in relief and pitched two-thirds of an inning with one walk and one strikeout.

Neither team was able to get on the board until the fifth inning when Lauren Dodson led off with a single and was pinch run for by Sandy Schumann. That was followed by Brittany Tucker reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman to put runners at first and second. Laura Phillips then singled and advanced to second on an error while Tucker moved all the way to third and Schumann was allowed to score on the error for a 1-0 score.

SFA tied the score up in the seventh at 1-1 when a throw that would have ended the game got away from the first baseman to even the score.

In the ninth inning the Ladyjacks scored a pair of runs to go up 3-1 and put the Islanders on the verge of defeat.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi fought back however, getting two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it a 3-3 game. Dodson reached base on a single down the left field line and then Tucker singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Stephanie Vead came on to pinch run for Tucker when Cassie Redman singled to the pitcher to load the bases with no outs.

After a strikeout swinging to make it two outs, Jamise Jackson singled to center to make it 3-2 on Dodson's run. Hannah Schwarz singled to left to bring home Vead and tie it at 3-3, but Redman was thrown out on the play to end the inning.

In the top of the tenth, SFA scored two more runs to go up by 5-3, a deficit the Islanders would not be able to recover from this time.

Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be a weekend Southland Conference series against Sam Houston State in Huntsville. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 beginning at 1 p.m. with Sunday start at 12 p.m. for the single game.
