NATCHITOCHES, La. - With both teams struggling offensively early on, junior pitcher Jordan Trujillo made sure her team never fell behind as she struck out a career-high 13 Northwestern State batters as Texas A&M - Corpus Christi finally got on the board for a 5-0 victory to take the series win on Sunday.
The Islanders are now 31-10 overall and 15-3 in Southland Conference play. The Lady Demons moved to 20-16 on the year with a 6-9 record in league games.
Trujillo picked up the win to improve to 12-5 after pitching a complete game shutout while giving up just four hits and one walk to go along with her 13 punch-out's.
The visitors threatened in the top of the first inning with Hannah Schwarz drawing a walk and Lauren Sanders single to put two runners on. After a Caley Jeter groundout moved both runners into scoring position, the Northwestern State starting pitcher picked up back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Trujillo struck out at least two batters in each of the first five innings, including fanning the side in order during the bottom of the second.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi got on the board in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit as Kacie Smith reached on a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a Lauren Dodson sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a wild pitch, she came home on another wild pitch that resulted in ball four to Brittany Tucker for a walk and a 1-0 lead.
It would be all Trujillo would need as she worked out of a jam in the sixth as the Lady Demons had a runner on third base when she struck out the final batter of the inning.
Going to the top of the seventh, the Islanders added four insurance runs to put the game out of reach. With one out in the frame, Sandy Schumann singled down the right field line and moved to second on a stolen base. Jamise Jackson followed with an RBI single to right that extended the margin to 2-0 with just one out. Stephanie Vead came on to pinch run for Jackson and moved to second when pinch hitter Laura Phillips reached on an error by the shortstop and was replaced on the base paths by Schwarz.
That brought Sanders to the plate who delivered the big hit with a two-RBI double over the left fielder's head to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Jeter singled in the final run as Sanders come home on the hit to center to finish the scoring at 5-0.
Trujillo completed the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a strikeout and two groundouts after giving up a leadoff single.
Sanders led the team with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and two RBI. Jeter, Schumann and Jackson had one hit each while Jeter and Jackson added one RBI apiece.
Next up for the Islanders will be a weekend series against Stephen F. Austin on April 9-10 at Chapman Field. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday while completing the series with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
