Texas A&M - Corpus Christi junior pitcher Greta Cecchetti has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week by a vote of the league sports information directors on Monday. It is the first honor of the year for Cecchetti and fourth-straight week an Islanders player has been honored. Jordan Trujillo and Vianca Pesina were recognized for their pitching in back-to-back weeks and were followed by Lauren Dodson receiving the honor for hitting last week.
Cecchetti has helped the Islanders to a 29-9 overall record and a 13-2 mark in league games. She was 2-1 on the week, beating Southland-rival Texas State twice with her only loss coming in a 2-0 game against the No. 8 Texas Longhorns in Austin.
Against UT, the junior pitched a complete game, giving up just two runs on seven hits against one of the top offenses in the nation.
This past weekend, she picked up a pair of wins against third-place Texas State at Chapman Field. In the opening game of the series on Saturday, she allowed just one run on five hits in a 4-1 victory.
On Sunday, Cecchetti came on in relief and shut down the Bobcats by pitching 3.1 innings while giving up just two hits and no runs while striking out four batters as the Islanders rallied from being down 4-0 to take a 5-4 walk-off victory.
On the season, the Bollate, Italy native is 6-3 with a 1.83 ERA. In league games, she has a perfect 4-0 record while totaling a 0.83 ERA.
Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be a weekend series on the road in Natchitoches, La. against the Northwestern State Lady Demons. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. while starting at 12 p.m. on Sunday in the series finale.
