CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team used a walk-off single by Brittany Tucker in game two of their Southland Conference series to sweep the Saturday doubleheader between the teams. The Islanders won game one by a 4-1 final while taking a 2-1 win in the second half of the twin bill.
The pair of home wins improves Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to 28-9 overall and 12-2 in Southland Conference games. The wins moved their record to 23-1 at home this year. The Bobcats are now 15-16 overall and 8-6 in league play.
Greta Cecchetti won the first game, pitching all seven innings while giving up just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out none to improve to 5-3 on the year. Vianca Pesina picked up the victory in game two, throwing seven innings for a complete game while giving up just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out two batters.
The late game featured more errors than offense early on as the Bobcats committed four while the Islanders had two of their own in the game. The Bobcats managed to get on the board first, scoring a single run in the top of the third for an early 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi evened it in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run as Lauren Sanders singled and was followed by a Caley Jeter triple to right center field to score Sanders all the way from first base to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
The Bobcats threatened in the both the fifth and seventh innings, but inning-ending double plays stopped the Texas State rally.
The bottom of the seventh featured late-game heroics from the Islanders catcher as Tucker hit a walk-off single to give her team a 2-1 victory. The inning started off with Sanders picking up a single, her fourth hit of the game and sixth of the day, to start the rally. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Kacie Smith doubled to left field to move Sanders over to third base. After a strikeout swinging put Texas A&M - Corpus Christi down to their final out, Tucker came to the plate and laced a 2-0 pitch down the right field line for the game-winning hit that allowed Sanders to score from third.
Sanders finished the game 4-for-4 while Hannah Schwarz, Jeter, Smith, Tucker, Cassie Redman and Laura Phillips had one hit apiece. Jeter and Tucker had the only two RBI for the team.
In the first game of the day the Islanders struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Sanders started it off with a single to the shortstop and moved to third on a Jeter single to right center field. Smith drove Sanders in with a single through the left side of the infield for a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats answered in the top of the second, scoring one run on two hits to even the score at 1-1.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning when Texas A&M - Corpus Christi plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Lauren Dodson started things off with a walk and moved to second on a Tucker single up the middle. Redman walked to load the bases before a passed ball allowed Dodson to score from third while Tucker and Redman moved up a base.
Phillips then walked to once again load the bases and Sandy Schumann followed with an RBI fielder's choice to score Tucker while Phillips was thrown out at second base. Redman then scored on another passed ball while Schumann advanced to second to make it a 4-1 game.
Cecchetti closed out the victory with a scoreless top of the seventh inning for her fifth win of the season. Offensively, Schwarz and Sanders both finished 2-for-4 while Smith, Tucker and Redman had one hit each.
