Softball hosts Texas State in battle of top Southland teams

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will be hosting Texas State this weekend in a three-game series that is important in Southland Conference standings early in the schedule. The Islanders are currently in first place while the Bobcats hold the third position in the league standings.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is 26-9 overall and 10-2 entering the series that will mark the halfway point in conference play. The Bobcats are just 15-14 on the year but have come on strong in league play with an 8-4 mark. The doubleheader on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. while the single game on Sunday is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

Last time out for the Islanders they lost a pair of games against the No. 8 Texas Longhorns on Wednesday in Austin. The Bobcats were scheduled to play Houston during the week but it was cancelled and will be made up at a later date. Last weekend both teams took 2-of-3 in Southland play, with the Islanders taking the series against Nicholls after losing the opening game. Texas State won the first two before dropping the series finale against McNeese State.

Hannah Schwarz continues to lead the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi offense with a .407 batting average which is currently fourth in the individual league standings while also leading the conference with 44 hits on the year. Schwarz and Caley Jeter are tied for first on the team and second in the league with 28 runs scored. Jeter is also tied for eighth in the league and is second on the team with a .352 average at the plate. Kacie Smith leads both her team and the Southland in RBI with 27 on the season while both Lauren Dodson and Brittany Tucker are tied for second with 24 apiece. Smith is also leading the team with four homers while Tucker is right behind her at three on the year.

Greta Cecchetti is coming off of a great pitching performance against the No. 8 Longhorns, allowing just two runs on seven hits in game two of the doubleheader. She is leading the team with a 2.15 ERA while sporting a 4-3 record. Vianca Pesina is second on the team in both wins (8) and ERA (2.38) while Jordan Trujillo has the best record at 11-5 and also has an ERA under three at 2.87 this season.

For Texas State, Haley Lemons leads the team with a .329 batting average as well as 18 RBI on the year. McKenzie Baack is hitting .325 and Jenna Emery is at .313 at the three hitters above .300 for the team. Baack has a team-leading two home runs and is second with 14 RBI. Shelby Carnline is also tied for the team lead with two home runs on the season.

All three of the Bobcats pitchers are under a 3.00 ERA with Anne Marie Taylor leading the group at 2.22 this year. Chandler Hall is second at 2.46 and Crystal Alaniz rounds out the trio with a 2.53 ERA. Hall leads the team in wins with her 8-9 record while Taylor has the best overall mark at 6-3 on the season.
