Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball player Lauren Dodson has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week the league announced on Monday afternoon. It is the first honor of the year for the senior shortstop from Grove, Okla.
Dodson helped lead the Islanders to a 6-1 record on the week, including a doubleheader sweep of the previously ranked Houston Cougars at Chapman Field and a conference series win over Nicholls on the road.
Dodson started off the week by recording the game-tying hit against Houston in the first game of their doubleheader. The Islanders would go on to win the contest by a 3-2 margin.
Against Houston-Victoria the next day, Dodson had the game-clinching hit to make it a 10-2 game and put the run-rule into effect.
During the weekend against the Nicholls Colonels, Dodson had both of the game-winning hits in games two and three to help Texas A&M - Corpus Christi take another league series victory. In the second game, she went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI as the team picked up an 11-8 victory in extra innings. In game three on Sunday, Dodson had yet another double and two RBI while helping the Islanders to a 3-1 win.
In total, Dodson hit .435 with four doubles and eight RBI to help the team improve their record to 26-7 overall and 10-2 in Southland Conference play.
Junior pitcher Greta Cecchetti was named honorable mention for the Pitcher of the Week award after going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 12 innings this past week. It is the third-straight week that an Islanders player has garnered Southland honors, with Vianca Pesina and Jordan Trujillo winning the Pitcher of the Week honor over the last two weeks.
The team is currently in first place of the league standings. The team will play a non-conference Wednesday doubleheader on Wednesday against the No. 12 Texas Longhorns. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at McCombs Field in Austin.
