Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball pitcher Vianca Pesina has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday by a vote of the league's sports information directors. It is the second-straight week an Islanders pitcher has won the award after Jordan Trujillo was recognized a week ago.
"I am happy that two of our pitchers got that honor in back-to-back weeks," said head coach Jake Schumann. "She deserves it because anytime she goes out there, competes and puts forth her best effort.
"I am just happy to see her recognized for it."
The native of Corpus Christi went 3-0 on the week with a 0.45 ERA in three appearances. She started two games and picked up the win while coming on in relief Sunday to get her third victory of the week. In the second game on Saturday against Central Arkansas, Pesina threw a complete game while giving up one run on five hits. She gave up four-straight hits and her only run at the start of the game while allowing just one more hit the rest of the way.
For the season, she is 8-1 overall with a 1.29 ERA in nine appearances with eight games started. She has thrown four complete games and struck out 26 batters while walking just eight batters. Opponents are hitting just .155 against Pesina this year.
The Islanders will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Houston in a non-conference doubleheader at Chapman Field. The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start with a 4 p.m. start for game two.
