Islanders softball rallies for doubleheader split against Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team saw it's 13-game winning streak snapped but rallied for a win in the second game of their doubleheader against Central Arkansas. After falling by a 5-4 score in game one, the Islanders came back firing to take a 6-1 final and split the first day of the Southland Conference series.

The team is now 19-6 on the season with a 7-1 league record. The Bears are 10-12 overall and 3-2 in conference games.

Jordan Trujillo suffered the loss in the opening game, pitching six innings while giving up five runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. In game two, Vianca Pesina got into trouble early, giving up four-straight hits to start the game but allowed just one the rest of the way. She tossed seven innings and gave up one run on five hits while striking out six and allowing no walks.

In game two, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi trailed 1-0 early after giving up a run in the bottom of the first, but Laura Phillips quickly changed that in the bottom of the third. Following a Brittany Tucker single, Phillips powered a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer and 2-1lead in the top of the second.

The Islanders added to the lead in the top of the fifth when a Lauren Dodson single scored Caley Jeter and moved Kacie Smith to third. After a Tucker walk loaded the bases, Sandy Schumann hit the ball up the middle for a two-run single and extended the lead to 5-1 after five.

Tucker finished the scoring in the sixth inning when she hit her third home run of the season for a 6-1 lead.

Tucker was the only Islanders player with two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hannah Schwarz, Stephanie Vead, Smith, Dodson, Phillips and Schumann each had one hit. Phillips and Schumann led the way with two RBI apiece while Dodson and Tucker had one apiece.

In the first game, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored first when Jeter doubled ahead of Kacie Smith, who reached on an error that allowed Jeter to score for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

The Bears answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run to make it 2-1 in favor of UCA.

The Islanders regained the lead in the fifth when Schwarz led off with a bunt single and scored following a Jeter RBI double to left. Smith followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Jeter and take a 3-2 lead.

The bottom of the sixth saw Trujillo give up a two-run homer and an RBI double as Central Arkansas regained a 5-3 advantage.

Smith got a run back for her team with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was unable to get any more as they fell by a 5-4 final.

Schwarz, Jeter and Smith each had two hits in the game. Vead was the only other player to get a hit for the Islanders while Smith led the team with two RBI. Jeter had the other RBI against UCA.
