Softball sweeps Lady Lions to run win streak to 11 games
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team picked up another victory on Sunday, beating Southeastern Louisiana by a 6-1 final to sweep the Lady Lions and extend its win streak to 11 games. It also gives the team its second-consecutive Southland Conference sweep as they scored 33 runs on 38 hits in the three-game series.
The Islanders are now 16-5 on the season with a 6-0 Southland Conference mark. The 6-0 mark comes after a sweep of UTSA and SELA this week, the first time the school has swept their first two Southland Conference series' since joining the league. SELA fell to 7-11 overall, 0-3 in league play after being swept this weekend.
"I was a little concerned after the sweep of UTSA that we would have a little bit of a letdown," said head coach Jake Schumann. "But we came out and hit well, pitched well and played defense.
"We're where we need to be right now."
Vianca Pesina picked up the win, improving to 5-1 on the year while giving up just one unearned run on three hits as she walked one batter and struck out three on the day. This weekend, the pitching staff gave up just four runs, with only one of them being earned.
"Jordan, Vianca, Greta and Constance are all doing a great job under Coach (Lisa) Norris' tutelage," said Schumann. "You've got to be talented but you also have to be coachable.
"Those guys are doing great things. As long as they all understand it is a staff and not just one person that is going to do it all we'll be successful."
Offensively, Caley Jeter led the way with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBI. Brittany Tucker also added two RBI as she went 1-for-2 and had her first sacrifice fly of the year.
As they have been doing in during their winning streak, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cassie Redman started the rally by drawing a walk with one out. She then came all the way around to score from first on a Jeter single through the left side, beating the throw home while Jeter moved to second. After a Kacie Smith walk, Lauren Dodson knocked in Jeter with a RBI single to right field to make it 2-0 for the home team.
The Islanders added another pair of runs in the third when Jeter started it off with a single through the left side and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Smith singled home Jeter for her 10th RBI of the weekend. After a Dodson sacrifice moved Smith to second, Tucker singled her home to make it 4-0 after three innings.
The Lady Lions picked up their only run of the day in the fifth when Pesina walked her only batter of the game and the next hitter flied to right field where Lauren Sanders and Jeter collided, causing Sanders to drop the ball for an error that allowed the runner to score and make it 4-1 after four and a half innings.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth when Smith doubled, Dodson sacrificed her to third and Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Smith from third to make it 5-1.
The Islanders added one more run in the sixth when Jamise Jackson pinch-hit and singled to left center. Sandy Schumann came on to run for Jackson and advanced to second when Hannah Schwarz laid down a bunt single in front of the catcher to put runners at first and second. A Redman groundout moved the runners up a base while another Jeter single, her third of the day, brought Schumann home to finish the scoring at 6-1 in favor of the home team.
Jeter finished with three hits, Smith had two and Schwarz, Redman, Dodson, Tucker and Jackson had one apiece. Smith's double was the only extra-base hit of the day. Jeter and Tucker finished with two RBI while Smith and Dodson had one each.
Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be a midweek doubleheader against Houston Baptist at Chapman Field. The Islanders will take on the Huskies on Tuesday with game start times of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on campus.
"We're going to go into this week with HBU on Tuesday and get some more at-bats for kids that need it and rest some people that need to rest a little bit," said Schumann. "Then we fly up to Conway and play Central Arkansas."
