CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team picked up a pair of run-rule victories on Saturday, taking the opening game of the doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana by a 16-0 final in five innings before taking the nightcap by an 11-3 final in six innings. The two teams will play the final game of the series at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders are now 15-5 on the season and 5-0 in Southland Conference play and are currently on a 10-game winning streak. The Lady Lions fall to 7-10 on the year and are no 0-2 in league play.
Jordan Trujillo picked up the win in game one to move to 8-2 on the year. She allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out four batters for the complete game shutout. In game two, Greta Cecchetti limited SELA to just three runs and four hits as she evened her record to 2-2 on the year. She allowed one walk while striking out six batters.
The offensive star of the day was Kacie Smith with four hits and nine RBI, including two home runs and five RBI in the second game.
In the opening game, the Islanders threatened in the first inning, loading the bases on three walks, but the Lady Lions got out of the jam on a strikeout and groundout to end the threat.
In the second inning, the home team broke through, scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit to take a 3-0 lead.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi broke through with four-straight hits in the third. Smith had the big hit in the inning, knocking a bases-loaded double to right center field to make it 9-0 after the third.
The Islanders added another seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth Jamise Jackson and Brittany Tucker each had a two-RBI hit, with Jackson singling and Tucker hitting a double to make it 16-0 after four.
Trujillo finished off the Lady Lions in the top of the fifth to secure the win for her team.
As a team, they totaled 11 hits while led by Tucker with three in the game. Smith, Lauren Sanders and Stephanie Vead each had two in the game. Vead, Cassie Redman, Jackson and Tucker each had two RBI while Smith led the way with four.
In game two, the Islanders offense exploded for a season-high 17 hits against SELA in just six innings.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored a single run in the first for an early lead before Katie Duhe homered to lead off the top of the second to even the score at 1-1.
The bottom half of the inning saw the home team plate five run second on six hits, highlighted by the first two-run home run of the game from Smith.
The Islanders added two more in the third on three hits, but the Lady Lions answered with a pair of their own in the top of the fourth to make it 8-3 after four innings.
Following a scoreless fifth, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi added three more runs to end the game in another run-rule victory at 11-3.
Smith drove in the first two runs of the inning with her second two-run home run of the day. Vead ended the game on a two-out single to left center field to finish the scoring.
Smith and Sandy Schumann each had three hits in the game while Vead, Hannah Schwarz, Caley Jeter and Lauren Dodson had two apiece. Sanders, Tucker and Jackson had one hit each. Smith led the offensive effort with five RBI while Jeter added three and Sanders, Tucker and Vead had one apiece.
