Softball team hosts UTSA to open Southland Conference play
The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will look to extend its season-high five-game winning streak on Tuesday when it plays Southland Conference foe UTSA at Chapman Field in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with the second game of the day following after a short break between games.
The Islanders are 10-5 on the season after sweeping through the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic, winning two games each over Arkansas and Texas Southern along with a single game against Rutgers. The Roadrunners have run into a tough patch, losing nine-straight after winning the first two of the season to sit at 2-9 heading into the series. UTSA has played nine games against teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Hannah Schwarz is leading Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in batting average with a .380 mark, putting her 10th in the league in individual batting. Brittany Tucker is second in the league in walks with 12 and second in on-base percentage at .524 on the year. Jordan Trujillo is tied for second in the league with five wins while placing 10th with a 3.07 ERA.
The Islanders team is currently second in batting, sixth in pitching and first in fielding among the 11-team Southland.
Molly Fichtner of UTSA is currently leading the league in average (.500), slugging percentage (1.200), on-base percentage (.605) and home runs (6) after the first three weeks of the season. As a team, the Roadrunners batters are 10th while placing 11th in the league for team pitching.
