Pesina no-hits Texas Southern to send Islanders to tournament final

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Vianca Pesina provided all the pitching needed to send her team to the finals of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic, no-hitting the Texas Southern Lady Tigers in a run-rule shortened game as Texas A&M - Corpus Christi won a 12-0 game in five innings. The win sends the team to a 3 p.m. rematch against Arkansas in the tournament championship game.

The Islanders are now 9-5 on the season after winning its fourth-straight game of the classic. Texas Southern falls to 4-10 on the year with the loss.

While the offense exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits, Pesina went the distance, throwing a no-hitter and giving up just one walk while striking out three batters. It took her just 62 pitches to shut out the Lady Tigers.

Texas A&M - Corpus started the game with a single run in the bottom of the first as Hannah Schwarz started the inning off with a single and moved to second on a Sandy Schumann sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third when Caley Jeter singled and was brought around to score on a Kacie Smith RBI-ground out.

In the second, the Islanders added a pair of runs, starting things off with a Brittany Tucker single. Laura Phillips then walked to put two runners on. Stephanie Vead singled to load the bases ahead of Schwarz's next plate appearance. The centerfielder hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Tucker for the RBI, and advanced all the way to third on an error while Phillips scored an unearned run.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi added four more runs in the third inning when Tucker singled and Phillips doubled to put runners on second and third. Jamise Jackson then singled to drive in Tucker and moved to second on an error while Phillips moved to third. Vead then doubled in Phillips and moved Jackson to third. Next up was Schwarz, who put down an RBI-bunt single while Jackson scored and Vead was thrown out at home attempting to score as well. Schumann then came to the plate and doubled down the left field line to bring home Schwarz and make it 7-0 in favor of the Islanders.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi finished off the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits to make it a 12-0 score. Smith started it off with a single to left and advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch. Lauren Dodson then singled on the infield and Tucker walked to load the bases. Phillips followed with an RBI-groundout to third base, scoring Smith and making it 8-0. A Jackson single cleared the bases, scoring Tucker and Dodson to make it 10-0 with just one out. Vead singled and was followed by a Schwarz single to load the bases once again. A Schumann groundout to second scored Jackson while Jeter walked to load the bases for a third time in the inning. Vead finished the scoring in the game when she came home on a passed ball by the Lady Tigers.

Vead and Schwarz led the team with three hits each while Jackson and Tucker added two apiece and Schumann, Jeter, Dodson and Phillips had one hit in the game. Every Islanders hitter had at least one in the game. Jackson led the team with three RBI while Schwarz and Schumann had a pair each. Smith, Phillips and Vead had one apiece in the outburst against Texas Southern.
