Arizona powers way to victory over Islanders to close out Hillenbrand Invitational
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team was roughed up against the No. 4 Arizona Wildcats once again, losing a 9-1 final in five innings to finish play at the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Wildcats were held to just seven hits in the game, but four of them were home runs against the Islanders.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi falls to 5-5 on the season after finishing 1-4 at the tournament, the lone win coming against Drake on Friday in a 2-0 contest.
Jordan Trujillo started the game and was tagged with the loss after pitching four innings, giving up eight runs, seven of them earned, on just five hits. She walked seven batters while striking out just two Wildcats. Constance Brandenburg came on in relief and pitched 0.1 innings before Arizona scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the run-rule into effect.
The game was scoreless through the first two-and-a-half innings with the Islanders holding the Wildcats hitless. Arizona got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third on a home run.
They added five more runs on two more homers in the bottom of the fourth to run the score to 7-0. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning as Cassie Redman reached on a single and advanced to second on an error. Sandy Schumann put down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error while Redman moved to third. Lauren Sanders grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Redman to score and making it 7-1 after four-and -a-half innings.
The Wildcats homered to lead off the fifth inning to make it 8-1, chasing Trujillo from the game and bringing on Brandenburg. She was able to get one out before giving up a run to end the game at 9-1 in five innings.
The Islanders return home to host the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic next weekend. The tournament will feature Rutgers, Arkansas and Texas Southern beginning on Thursday at Chapman Field.
