TUCSON, Ariz. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team was unable to hold onto an early lead as they battle the Pacific Tigers to a 6-4 loss in the first game of day two at the Hillenbrand Invitational. They are scheduled to play Kennesaw State later in the day at 7 p.m. to close the second day of play.
Jordan Trujillo was roughed up for six runs on 12 hits in five innings, giving up three walks and striking out four to move to 3-1 on the year. Constance Brandenburg came on in relief and tossed 1.2 innings of no-hit softball. The team is now 5-3 on the season after the loss while Pacific improved to 4-0 on the year.
The Islanders scored first with three runs in the third inning on just one hit while benefitting from patience at the plate. Hannah Schwarz singled with one out and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cassie Redman. The next five batters reached base without swinging the bat, as Caley Jeter and Kacie Smith reached on back-to-back hit-by-pitches to load the bases. Lauren Dodson Walked to score Schwarz, Brittany Tucker walked to score Jeter and Sandy Schumann garnered a free pass to bring Smith home for a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers scored a single run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1, but the Islanders got it back quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Laura Phillips reached on a hit-by-pitch and Meagan McKinney came on to pinch run for Phillips. McKinney moved to second on a Schwarz groundout and advanced to third on a bunt single by Redman. McKinney came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Jeter to make it 4-1 in favor of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
Three runs in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the sixth game Pacific a 6-4 lead. The Islanders threatened in the bottom of the final inning, putting the tying run on first base, but they were unable to complete the comeback, falling 6-4 in the first game of the day at the Hillenbrand Invitational.
Schwarz was the top hitter for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, going 3-for-4 at the plate while Redman had the only other base hit for the team. Jeter, Dodson, Tucker and Schumann each had one RBI apiece.
Next up is a game against the Kennesaw State Owls at 7 p.m. to finish off the evening. The Owls are 4-2 after dropping games against Pacific and Drake on the first day of play. They play host Arizona at 5 p.m. ahead of their game against the Islanders.
