Islanders offense explodes for another run-rule victory

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team used another offensive explosion to go along with dominate pitching performances to win a 9-0 contest against UT Arlington in their first game of the day at the Best Western Marina Grand Invitational on Saturday morning. The team will play again with a scheduled start of 3 p.m. against the winner of the game between Cleveland State and Loyola Chicago.

The Islanders are now 3-1 on the season with two run-rule victories in the season-opening tournament. Vianca Pesina started the game and picked up the win after going three innings, giving up no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking none. Greta Cecchetti came on in relief and got her first save of the season, pitching two innings and allowed no runs on just one hit.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored first, picking up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning after being down to their final out of the frame. Caley Jeter started it off with a single up the middle and advanced to second when Kacie Smith reached on a hit-by-pitch to put runners at first and second. A Lauren Dodson double to center field scored both runners to put the score at 2-0 early on.

The Islanders added a single run in the third inning as they started another two-out rally. Dodson drew a walk and stole second base. She came around to score when Brittany Tucker lined a single down the left field line to make it 3-0 after three.

The big inning came in the bottom of the fourth when Hannah Schwarz singled to left and Cassie Redman singled on the infield to put runners on first and second. A Jeter groundout moved the runners to second and third while Smith reached on an error to bring Schwarz home and move Redman to third. Smith the stole second base and Dodson had another two-run double to make it 6-0. Tucker and Meagan McKinney had back-to-back walks to load the bases for pinch hitter Stephanie Vead. In her first collegiate at-bat, Vead hit a bases-clearing double to right center and finish the scoring at 9-1.

Cecchetti finished off the victory in the top of the fifth, setting down the Mavericks in order to put the run-rule in effect.

Dodson finished the game 2-for-2 with four RBI, two doubles and a walk. Vead was 1-for-1 with three RBI after her bases-loaded double. Tucker finished with one hit and one RBI while Schwarz, Redman and Jeter all added one hit apiece.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will play again at 3 p.m. in the Best Western Marina Grand Invitational Championship Game against the winner of the Loyola Chicago and Cleveland State game.
