Islanders split pair of games on second day of Best Western Marina Grand Invitational
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi offense struggled in the first game but came alive in the second to split a pair of games on the second day of their home tournament. The Islanders won game two against UT Arlington by a 6-1 final after dropping the first game by a 3-0 score against Cleveland State.
The team moves to 2-1 on the season with Greta Cecchetti taking the loss in game one and Vianca Pesina picking up her first win of the year in the game against UTA.
Against UT Arlington in their second game of the day, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored first by picking up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Hannah Schwarz reached base on a bunt single and stole second base to open the frame. After moving over to third on a groundout, Caley Jeter singled to bring home Schwarz and make it 1-0 after one inning.
UTA knotted the score in the top of the fourth with a single run, but the tie would not last long as the Islanders added five runs in the bottom half of the inning to break the game open. Lauren Dodson started it with a single and had Lauren Sanders come on to pinch-run for her. Brittany Tucker singled and moved Sanders over to third ahead of a Laura Phillips single that scored Sanders to give her team the lead. The Islanders batted around in the inning, picking up five runs on five hits to take a 6-1 advantage.
Constance Brandenburg came on to shut down the Lady Mavs, pitching three innings while giving up no hits and striking out three to just one walk. Pesina pitched the other four innings for the win, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out one batter as well as walking one.
No Islanders hitter had more than one hit in the game, with Schwarz, Jeter, Kacie Smith, Tucker and Meagan McKinney picking up one each. Jeter, Sandy Schumann, Smith, Phillips and McKinney also had one RBI apiece.
In their first game of the day, the Islanders dropped a 3-0 final to Cleveland State as the offense was unable to get going against the Vikings. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was held to just two hits in the game, one apiece from Lauren Dodson and Meagan McKinney. Greta Cecchetti was tagged with the loss, going 4.0 innings while giving up two runs on two hits and striking out four to just two walks in her first action with the Islanders.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and UT Arlington will meet in the 9 a.m. game on Saturday morning as the No. 2 vs. No. 3 seed game. Cleveland State picked up the No. 1 seed in the tourney and will face Loyola Chicago in the 11 a.m. contest. The loser of each game will face each other at 1 p.m. while the two winners will square off for the tournament crown beginning at 3 p.m. in the final game of the day.
