Softball team sweeps doubleheader against Alvin to stay undefeated in the fall
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team took a pair of mercy-rule games against Alvin Community College on Friday to stay unbeaten during the fall schedule. In game one, the Islanders took a 14-3 win and won 10-0 in the second half of the twin bill.
Vianca Pesina got the win in game one while Jordan Trujillo pitched a shutout in game two for the victory.
Coming up big in game one was Caley Jeter, who went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park grand slam and five RBI. Hannah Schwarz was also perfect in the contest, going 4-for-4 with two RBI.
A&M - Corpus Christi scored one in the opening inning, four in the second frame and five in the third inning to reach the required runs for the mercy rule.
The Islanders added four in the bottom of the fourth inning on Jeter's inside-the-park grand slam to put the score at 14-0. Alvin scored three runs in the top of the fifth but could get no more as the game ended at a 14-3 score.
Pesina went five innings, giving up five hits and striking out one while walking six. Meagan McKinney, Sandy Schumann and Lauren Sanders added two hits each while Cassie Redman picked up a hit as well. In all, A&M - Corpus Christi pounded out 14 hits to go along with their 14 runs in game one.
Game two had the Islanders scoring four runs in the opening inning to take control once again. Lauren Dodson had a two RBI double to get the big hit in the frame. The third inning saw A&M - Corpus Christi score three more runs on RBI singles from Schumann, Redman and Sanders.
The Islanders finished the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, plating three runs on a two-RBI triple from Dodson and an RBI single from Kacie Smith.
Trujillo gave up just one hit in the second game, striking out four and walking just one batter. Dodson, and Schumann finished the game with two hits apiece. Dodson and Schumann each had a multi-RBI game, with Dodson plating four and Schumann bringing two runners across. Schwarz, Jeter, Tucker, Smith, Redman and Sanders each picked up one hit.
The Islanders finish the fall schedule on Nov. 6 against Texas A&M - International with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
