CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team picked up a pair of wins on their fall schedule Saturday after beating St. Edward's 10-2 in game one and 3-1 in the second game.
Vianca Pesina picked up both wins for the Islanders as she came on in relief in the opening game and started the second game of the doubleheader. Jordan Trujillo started the first game and went five innings while allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out six batters. Pesina pitched a total of five innings, giving up no runs on one hit, no walks and striking out four. Constance Brandenburg also pitched five innings, giving up one run on one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
In the first game, A&M - Corpus Christi took a 1-0 lead after Hannah Schwarz reached on a walk, advanced to second on a Sandy Schumann walk, moved to third on a Caley Jeter single and came around to score on a Meagan McKinney sacrifice fly.
The Hilltoppers tied the score up with a run of their own in the top of the second. The Islanders responded quickly, picking up another run in the bottom half of the inning. Kacie Smith started it off with a double and came in to score on a Cassie Redman single to make it 2-1.
After St. Edward's tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth, the score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth.
Jamise Jackson hit a solo home run in the inning to start the scoring. Brittany Tucker drew a walk and Lauren Sanders followed with a single to put two runners on. Laurent Dodson picked up a pair of RBI with a two-run double to make it 5-2 in favor of the Islanders. Cassie Redman brought Dodson home with a double of her own.
In the seventh, the Islanders added four more runs after Jackson reached on a single and Rucker singles. Dodson brought Jackson home with a grounder to the shortstop and reached base on an error. Laura Phillips hit a two-run double to push the score to 9-2 before another double by Redman brought Phillips home and finished the scoring at 10-2.
Game two was a lower scoring affair with just four runs being scored between the two teams. The Islanders jumped out in front early, picking up two runs in the second inning. Tucker singled to lead it off and advanced to second on a Phillips single. A Smith fielder's choice allowed Tucker to move to third while Phillips was thrown out at second. Rebekah Garcia then singled to ring home Tucker and move Smith to second. After Smith stole third base, she came home on a wild pitch by the Hilltoppers.
In the third inning, Jessica Galvan reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a Tucker sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
St. Edward's scored their only run in the top of the sixth inning.
Next up for the Islanders will be Alvin Community College on Friday, Oct. 22 at Chapman Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
