The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will be in action this weekend when they host the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in a game on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Chapman Field.
This will be the third time the Islanders have been in action this fall after winning their opening game 8-0 over Blinn College and tying 6-6 against Galveston College in Houston two weeks ago.
In those games, the A&M - Corpus Christi offense produced well, but the pitching and defense were inconsistent. Head coach Jake Schumann has been working with his team since then to improve in those areas and hopes to see it payoff this weekend.
"We are looking to improve our offensive output," said Schumann. "Then we want to make sure that we are all on the same page defensively, and improve from last time we played.
"We also need to continue to pitch as well as we have both in the scrimmages in Houston and in intrasquad."
The Hilltoppers finished last season with a 34-21 record and were 19-7 overall. They won their second-straight Heartland Conference Championship and are perennially ranked in the Top 25 of the Division II standings.
They will be led by Lexi Stephens, who batted .421 to lead the team last season, and Megan Bailey, who finished second with a .415 average.
"It should be a good test for us," said Schumann. "I think they went to the World Series a couple of years back, and they will be a Top 20 DII program.
"It'll be our toughest test of the fall for sure."
Admission to the game is free to the public.
