Islanders softball wins first game, ties second contest of fall schedule

HOUSTON - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team picked up an 8-0 win over Blinn College in the morning and played to a 6-6 tie in the second game of the day against Galveston College.

In the first game, newcomer Jordan Trujillo held Blinn to just two hits in the game as the Islanders used the power of three home runs to take an 8-0 victory. Brittany Tucker and Meagan McKinney hit back-to-back homers and Stephanie Vead hit a shot of her own the next inning to give the Islanders all of the offense they would need in the first game of the day.

"We played great solid defense in the first game," said head coach Jake Schumann. "I was happy with all three phases; offense, defense and pitching, in our first game."

After a two-and-a half hour break, the A&M - Corpus Christi softball team went back to work against Galveston College in a 2:30 p.m. contest.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead early on, the Islanders made some miscues on defense that allowed Galveston back into the contest.

"After we took a 3-0 lead, we gave everybody a chance to play in the game," said Schumann. "Galveston did a great job of coming back.

"We didn't pitch or play defense as good in the second game."

Schumann used the early contests to take stock of his team and see what they need to work on in the upcoming weeks before playing again in two weeks.

"After our first weekend, I would say it is mission accomplished," said Schumann. "We figured out what we need to work on.

"Overall it was a good day. The next two weeks, we have to get everybody on the same page defensively. We did really well at times pitching, other times you could see what we needed to get better at."

The Islanders will host St. Edward's on Oct. 16 at Chapman Field with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
