Margo Hurdt was named to the Southland Softball All-Academic Second Team on Tuesday afternoon after a vote by the leagues' sports information directors, coaches and academic advisors. Hurdt recently completed her degree and graduated in May after the most successful career as a hitter in Islander history.
Hurdt qualified for the team by having a 3.16 GPA following the fall semester and completed her collegiate career with an overall 3.33 GPA and a bachelor's degree in marketing this past May.
In addition to her hard work in the classroom, her hard work on the field of play allowed her to become the all-time Islander leader in home runs with 27 and RBI with 119 in her career. Not just limited to the batter's box, Hurdt also put her effort into the circle for the Islanders, winning 14 games and notching the sixth-most victories in school history.
It marks the third straight year an Islander has been named to the Southland All-Academic teams as Larissa Martin was a member last season and Andrea Simancas received the honor after both the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Hurdt will put her degree to work this upcoming year when she becomes a part of the Islander Athletic Department in a working capacity. She, along with former women's basketball player Elisa Beagle and women's basketball/volleyball player Diandra Torres will work as marketing and development assistants. The former Islanders will help with promotions, game events and helping to get the Islander brand out to the general public.
