San Marcos - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team could never quite get the offense going on Thursday morning as they lost a 6-0 game to the McNeese State Cowgirls in the opening game of the Southland Conference Tournament. The loss sends the Islanders to a 1:30 PM game against an undetermined opponent on Friday afternoon.
The loss sends A&M-Corpus Christi to 35-21 on the year while the Cowgirls improved to 35-25 this season. Starting pitcher Addie Tallman took the loss after going just one inning and giving up one run while moving to 12-8 on the season.
The Islanders threatened several times early on but were never able to produce any runs. Through the first five innings, they left eight runners stranded on the base paths. The best opportunity came in the third inning as Sandy Schumann and Lauren Sanders had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After a Cassie Redman sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Hannah Schwarz reached on a walk to load the bases. Caley Jeter hit a hard liner to left side of the infield but the Cowgirls shortstop was in the perfect position to make the play for the second out. Margo Hurdt grounded out to end the threat by the Islanders with the bases loaded.
McNeese State scored a single run in the second, got two in the third and picked up another run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead through five innings.
Down to their final six outs, the Islanders were unable to get anything going. They went down in order in the sixth and threatened in the seventh but were unable to get any runs across. Schwarz and Jeter had back-to-back singles with two outs but Hurdt flew out to left field to end the game.
The Islanders come back on Friday afternoon against one of three teams. UT Arlington and Nicholls play the second game of the day at the tournament. The winner of that game will move on to face tournament host Texas State at 6:30 PM tonight. The loser of that game will be the Islanders opponent on Friday.
