The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team got another big performance from Margo Hurdt on senior day. For the second day in-a-row, Caley Jeter had a big day and Hurdt notched the game-winning hit and the win in the circle to give the Islanders a 4-3 win over Southland opponent UT Arlington at Chapman Field.
Islander seniors Hurdt, Addie Tallman and Morgan Seals were recognized before the game for their contributions to the softball program.
The Islanders are now 32-20 overall and 13-14 in Southland Conference games while the Mavericks fall to 26-22 overall and 16-12 in league play. Hurdt started the game in the circle for the Islanders and picked up the win to improve to 5-2 on the year after going 4.2 innings while giving up just four hits and three runs. Elena Crabtree came on in relief for her fifth save of the year.
"For Margo to go out on senior day and come up big for us offensively and in the circle was special," said head coach Jake Schumann. "I was also really happy that Elena came in and did a good job both days."
The Islanders started the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the first inning as Hannah Schwarz laid down a bunt single and scored when Jeter hit into a fielder's choice that saw the Maverick pitcher sail her throw over the second baseman's head and get past the centerfielder for two errors that scored Schwarz and moved Jeter to third.
The Mavericks tied it up in the top of the third inning with a solo home run to left field that evened the score at 1-1. The Islanders regained the lead when they picked up three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Meagan McKinney started it off with a hit-by-pitch then moved to third base when Lauren Sanders singled and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman. A bunt single by Schwarz loaded the bases for the Islanders with Jeter up next. She lined a two-RBI single through the left side to make it 3-1 Islanders. Hurdt followed with an RBI single of her own to extend the lead to 4-1 after three innings.
"Caley is the best player in our conference in my opinion," said Schumann. "She'll be nominated for Hitter of the Year and is probably the best hitter I have ever coached in 10 years.
"She has a chance to get a hit every single chance she steps into the box because of her preparation and the way she handles herself."
The Mavericks scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to come within one run but Crabtree came on in relief and shut them down, giving up just one hit and no runs in 2.1 innings to record her league-leading fifth save of the season.
Jeter led the team with two RBI while Hurdt had the other. Schwarz led the team in hitting, going 2-for-3 while Jeter, Hurdt, Kacie Smith, McKinney and Sanders had one hit apiece.
The Islanders will wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road in Hammond, La. against Southeastern Louisiana. Two games are scheduled for Saturday beginning at 3 PM with a single game on Sunday at 12 PM. A&M-Corpus Christi heads into the weekend needing a sweep and some help to qualify for the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament on May 13-15 in San Marcos.
