Houston - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader against Houston Baptist. The Islanders picked up a 6-0 win in game one before falling by an 8-0 final in five innings against the Huskies.
The Islanders reached to 30-win mark for just the fifth time in school history by improving to 30-19 this year. The Huskies moved to 16-26 on the season. Addie Tallman continued her recent string of strong outings by picking up the win in game one, pitching a complete game while giving up just five hits and no walks while striking out one to improve to 12-6 on the year. Elena Crabtree took the loss in game two after going just 2.2 innings and giving up six runs, four of them earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out one to fall to 14-11 this season.
In game one, the Islanders started the scoring in the third inning, picking up a pair of runs on three hits. Kacie Smith led off with a single and stole second base. A Lauren Sanders single advanced Smith to third while Sanders moved up to second on another steal. Cassie Redman picked up an RBI groundout to score Smith and advance Sanders to third. Hannah Schwarz also picked up an RBI groundout to score Sanders and make it 2-0 after three.
The Islanders scored single runs in each of the next four innings to extend their advantage. In the fourth, Brittany Tucker reached and advanced to second base on an error. After Kyrie Panter came on to pinch run for Tucker, Panter advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Meagan McKinney groundout to make it 3-0.
In the fifth, Schwarz reached on a bunt single and stole second base. After a Caley Jeter walk, Margo Hurdt reached on an error to load the bases. Tucker scored Schwarz from third on yet another RBI groundout to make it 4-0 in favor of the Islanders.
In the sixth, Sanders reached on an error, stole second and came around to score on a Redman single up the middle to make it 5-0. The final run came in the top of the seventh as Hurdt singled down the left field line and was pinch run for by Alejia Cain. Tucker advanced Cain to second on a groundout and Lauren Dodson brought Cain home with an RBI single to right.
Schwarz, Hurdt and Smith each had two hits while Redman led the team with two RBI in the game. Schwarz, Tucker and McKinney had one RBI each for the Islanders.
In the second game, the Islanders used a mix of starters and backups as the team split the doubleheader with an 8-0 loss. Schwarz led the team by going 2-for-3 as the Islanders picked up just four hits. Alaina Byars and Landry Moore each had one hit to round out the offensive output.
Next up for the Islanders are the UT Arlington Lady Mavs on May 1-2 at Chapman Field. It will be the final home series of the year for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with the Sunday game being Senior Day for Tallman, Hurdt and Morgan Seals. The trio will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the Islander program. Game time is set for a 1 PM start on Saturday for the doubleheader and an 11 AM first pitch on Sunday.
