The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team was unable to avoid the sweep on Sunday, losing a 5-0 game to the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Chapman Field.
The Islanders fall to 25-17 overall and 9-12 in Southland play after losing their sixth-straight conference game. The Bearkats improved to 15-22 on the year and 7-11 in Southland games. Elena Crabtree started and took the loss, going just two innings and giving up two runs as she moved to 13-9 on the season.
The Bearkats chased Crabtree after two innings as she gave up a two-run double to the SHSU centerfielder to make it 2-0. SHSU picked up single runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Islanders had just one runner reach third base as they were unable to get their high-powered offense into motion. They collected just eight hits with two of them coming in the final inning but a spectacular diving catch by the SHSU centerfielder ended the threat from TAMUCC.
Lauren Dodson stood out for the Islanders, picking up three of the hits as she went 3-for-3 on the day. Dodson hit .700 on the weekend, going 7-10, and picking up three RBI in the series against SHSU. Margo Hurdt had two hits while Hannah Schwarz, Caley Jeter and Meagan McKinney had one hit apiece.
Next up for the Islanders in a midweek doubleheader against Prairie View A&M on Wednesday afternoon in Houston. They follow it up with a Southland road series in Lake Charles, La. against the McNeese State Cowgirls next Saturday and Sunday as they look to get back into contention and qualify for the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament with just three conference series' left in the season.
