The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team lost a 4-2 contest in the opening game of their Southland Conference series and then fell by a 9-8 final in game two against the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Chapman Field.
The Islanders move their record to 25-16 overall this season and 9-11 in Southland games. The Bearkats improve to 14-22 for the season and 6-11 in Southland contests. Starter Elena Crabtree was tagged with the loss to fall to 13-8 on the season. Addie Tallman fell to 8-6 after taking the loss in game two.
In game one, walks and two costly errors allowed the Bearkats to score four runs, two of them unearned, while notching just two hits in the top of the first inning.
The Islanders threatened in the first three innings, but were unable to get runs as they left two on base in the first and third innings and left the bases loaded in the second inning.
The Islanders finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run on an RBI triple by Margo Hurdt to score Caley Jeter from first.
They added to the total with another single run in the bottom of the sixth against the Bearkats. Kacie Smith led off with a single and moved to second base on a ground out by Meagan McKinney. A single by Cassie Redman brought Smith home to make it 4-2 in favor of SHSU after six innings.
The Islanders were unable to get any more runs to absorb the series-opening loss.
Lauren Dodson and Smith had a pair of hits each while Redman and Hurdt had the only two RBI for TAMUCC.
In game two, the Islanders struggled early on once again as Tallman lasted just a third of an inning, retiring the first batter of the game before walking three straight to load the bases. The Islanders fell behind 4-0 after one inning and 7-0 after two and a half innings before getting on the board.
In the bottom half of the third, TAMUCC exploded for six runs to get back to within one at a 7-6 score. Hannah Schwarz started the rally with a one-out bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jeter then reached on a throwing error and advanced to second while Schwarz scored. Hurdt then reached on a hit-by-pitch with Brittany Tucker following with an RBI single to score Jeter while each runner advanced a base on a Bearkat error.
Melissa Casey came on to pinch-run for Tucker and Dodson followed that up with a 2-RBI double down the left field line to score Hurdt and Casey to make it 7-4 Bearkats. The Islanders were not done yet, as Smith singled up the middle to score Dodson. McKinney then reached on a hit-by-pitch and Lauren Sanders reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Redman brought home the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Smith and made it 7-6 for SHSU.
The Bearkats added single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth to extend their lead to 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Islanders scored a pair of runs in their final at bat but were unable to come all the way back, falling by a 9-8 final to the Bearkats.
Schwarz, Dodson and Smith led TAMUCC with two hits apiece while Dodson added three RBI and Smith contributed two. Redman and Tucker each had one to round out the offense for the Islanders.
