ISLANDERS FALL 4-3 TO LADYJACKS IN NINE-INNING HEARTBREAKER

Nacogdoches - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team took a tough loss to close out their series with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on Saturday afternoon. The Islanders lost 4-3 in nine innings as SFA took all three games of the Southland Conference series.

The Islanders fall to 23-14 on the season and 9-9 in Southland play. SFA improved to 20-8 on the year and extended their conference-leading record to 13-2 in Southland games. Elena Crabtree came on in relief of starter Addie Tallman and took the loss to fall to 13-7 on the year.

After neither team was able to get a run in the first three innings, the Islanders scored a run to take their first lead of the weekend in the fourth. Kacie Smith led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Dodson. Lauren Sanders brought Smith home on an RBI double down the left field line to break the scoreless tie and give TAMUCC a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived however, as the Ladyjacks picked up a run in the bottom half of the fourth to even the game at 1-1 in their next at bat.

The Islanders broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth inning when Lauren Dodson hit a solo home run to centerfield and gave TAMUCC a 2-1 advantage.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Islanders until the bottom of the seventh inning when SFA scored a single run to tie the game once again at 2-2. After scoring the tying run, SFA had runners on second and third with no outs but the Islanders were able to work their way out of a jam by recording three straight outs.

The Islanders took another one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning when they loaded the bases on a pair of singles and walk. After SFA brought in Angela White to relieve Monika Covington, White hit Hannah Schwarz with her first pitch to bring home pinch runner Alejia Cain and give TAMUCC a 3-2 lead.

Although the Islanders had a second chance at taking the game, SFA would not be denied, scoring a pair of runs on a walk-off two-run homer by Jessica Arana in the bottom of the ninth to take the series sweep.

Dodson was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with one RBI on her solo homer. Sanders went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jeter was 1-for-4 with the final RBI for TAMUCC.

Next up for the Islanders is a pair of midweek games against Prairie View A&M. The teams will play on Wednesday starting at 1 PM at Chapman Field. They return to Southland play next weekend when they host UT Arlington in a three-game series.
