San Marcos - After losing the first game on Sunday at Texas State (13-13, 9-3) the Islanders (19-10, 6-6) responded with a second game win. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dropped the first game 7-6 and then won game two 11-7.
After losing a one run game against the Bobcats the Islanders jumped out to an early four-run lead after half an inning. Brittany Tucker had a grand slam following a single, fielder's choice and error.
A&M-Corpus Christi built their lead to 6-0 in the top of the third when Margo Hurdt led off the inning with a home run. Alejia Can brought in the second run on sacrifice that allowed Lauren Dodson to score.
In the bottom of the third, Texas State stormed back chasing starter Addie Tallman from the game after back-to-back walks. The Bobcats, after all was said and done, scored six runs on three hits and an error to take a 7-6 lead after three.
The visitors didn't go down without a fight and started their rally in the top of the fifth inning. TAMUCC opened the frame with two singles from Tucker and Dodson and then Meagan McKinney reached on an error that loaded the bases.
Sandy Schumann brought in two runs with a double to put the Islanders back on top. Hannah Schwartz and Hurdt added RBIs in the inning that pushed the lead to three runs. The visitors added one more to take an 11-7 lead they didn't give up.
Elena Crabtree with five innings of relief earned her 11th win of the season to moved to 11-4.
In the opening game, TAMUCC fell behind early after starter Hurdt surrendered six runs during the opening two innings. Leah Boatright's grand slam put the home team up 4-0 after one.
Texas State added three more runs in bottom of the second inning to increase the deficit to 7-0. The Islanders fought back in the third on a two-run single by Margo Hurdt to close within five runs.
A&M-Corpus Christi furiously stormed back in the last two innings, scoring four runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, McKinney and Schumann had back-to-back singles with both advancing on a passed ball and scoring McKinney. Caley Jeter got her team to within 7-5 after a two-run double.
Tucker opened the seventh inning with a double and Lauren Dodson then followed with a double of her own, scoring pinch runner Kyrie Panter and cutting the Bobcat lead to one. Cain entered as a pinch runner for Dodson and McKinney was next reached on a hit-by-pitch to put two on with no outs.
It was not meant to be however, as Schumann struck out, Cain was caught stealing and Lauren Sanders grounded out to second ending the game.
Next up for the Islander softball team is a Thursday match-up against the University of Texas in Austin.
