San Marcos - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team just missed on an opportunity to upset the defending Southland Conference Champions and league-leading Texas State Bobcats with a 4-3 road loss on Saturday evening. It was the first of a three-game series between the two teams.

TAMUCC is now 18-9 on the year and 5-5 in Southland games. The Bobcats improve to 12-12 overall and 8-2 in Southland play. Elena Crabtree pitched for the Islanders and took the loss, falling to 10-4 on the year after going 6.2 innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs while walking four and striking out three.

The Islanders took the early lead with a single run in the top of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Meagan McKinney drew a walk and was immediately brought home to score by a Lauren Sanders double to make it 1-0.

TAMUCC added to its lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to extend it to a 3-0 score. Cassie Redman led the inning off with a single and moved to second with a stolen base. Hannah Schwarz then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Redman to third base with just one out. After Texas State changed pitchers, Caley Jeter reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Redman to score from third. Margo Hurdt followed with a double to center field that brought Jeter around to score.

The lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bobcats loaded the bases and got a bases-clearing double from Leah Boatright to even the game at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Islanders threatened but could not produce a run as they left the bases loaded when the inning ended. Texas State made the most of their opportunity in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run on a walk-off double by Chandler Hall.

Hall also recorded the win for the Bobcats to improve to 8-6 on the year.

Offensively for TAMUCC, they produced seven hits. Brittany Tucker was the only one with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the day. Redman, Schwarz, Jeter, Hurdt and Sanders each recorded one hit for the Islanders. Jeter, Hurdt and Sanders also had one RBI each.

Due to the weather limiting the Saturday action to just one game, the Islanders and Bobcats will face each other twice tomorrow. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12 PM in San Marcos.
