The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team missed a sweep of the Nicholls Colonels on Sunday morning, dropping a 6-3 decision in the final of a three-game series at Chapman Field. Costly errors did the Islanders in as they allowed three unearned runs to make up the final margin.

"Sundays for some reason are a hard day for us to play, we don't play very enthusiastic and we're just going through the motions," said head coach Jake Schumann. "Sometimes they need that to happen for us to move forward so we're just going to try to take it as a positive and work a little harder this week at staying focused and doing what we need to do."

TAMUCC is now 18-8 on the year and 5-4 in Southland games. The Colonels are 11-7 overall and 5-4 as well in the Southland. Elena Crabtree took the loss for the Islanders, falling to 10-3 on the season after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up nine hits and six runs, three of them earned while not recording a walk or a strikeout. Margo Hurdt came on to pitch the final 2.2 innings without giving up a hit and walking none while striking out one.

Nicholls opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning after not scoring a run in the first two games of the series on Saturday. The Islanders answered back with two runs on one hit in the bottom half of the first.

Hannah Schwarz led off the inning with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second when Cassie Redman reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball by the Nicholls catcher. Schwarz came home to score on a Caley Jeter groundout while Redman was brought in by Hurdt on an RBI groundout as well to make it 2-0 after one full inning.

Nicholls answered with another single run in the top of the second to even the score. It the top of the third, they broke the game open, scoring three runs, two of them unearned, on three hits and three TAMUCC errors. Once the dust settled, they held a 5-2 advantage going to the bottom of the third inning.

The Islanders got a run back in the third, scoring after Schwarz hit a bunt single and came home to score on a Jeter triple down the left field line.

It was all the Islanders were able to get back as the Colonels added another run in the fifth inning to finish the scoring at 6-3 in favor of Nicholls.

Schwarz was the only Islander to record two hits as Jeter, Lauren Dodson and Kacie Smith each had one in the game. Jeter had two RBI while Hurdt added one for the TAMUCC offense.

Next up for the Islanders are the Texas State Bobcats in a three-game series starting on Saturday, Mar. 20 in San Marcos. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 PM with a single game on Sunday beginning at 12 PM.
