ISLANDER SOFTBALL SHUTS DOWN COLONELS IN FIRST DAY OF SOUTHLAND SERIES
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team picked up another pair of Southland Conference wins after down the Nicholls Colonels in a Saturday doubleheader. The Islanders took a 3-0 final in the first game and added another shutout in game two with a 6-0 win over the Colonels.
"I challenged our pitchers to win games this weekend instead of having the offense carry us," said head coach Jake Schumann "I'd say they responded pretty well with two shutouts here today."
TAMUCC improves to 18-7 on the season and 5-3 in Southland games. The Colonels move to 10-7 on the year with a 4-4 Southland record. Elena Crabtree picked up her 10th win of the season to improve to 10-2 after shutting out the Colonels while allowing just three hits and striking out four while walking none in the first game. Margo Hurdt improved her record to 3-1 on the season after starting the second game and pitching six innings and giving up just four hits while walking three and striking out five.
Through the first three innings of game one, neither team was able to do anything offensively as it remained scoreless until the Islanders broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Meagan McKinney started the inning with a walk and stole second base to move into scoring position. After a pair of outs, Hurdt put the Islanders on the scoreboard with a single to right field. Lauren Dodson followed that up with an RBI double to center field to score Hurdt and make it 2-0 in favor of TAMUCC.
The Islanders added to the lead in the sixth when Brittany Tucker led off the inning with a double to center field. Kyrie Panter came on to pinch run for Tucker and advanced to third when Hurdt hit a fly out to right field. Panter then came home to score and make it 3-0 on an illegal pitch by the Colonels' Lacey Gros.
Cassie Redman was the only Islander with two hits while Caley Jeter, Tucker, Hurdt and Dodson each had one. Tucker and Dodson had the only two RBI for TAMUCC.
In game two, the Islander pitchers continued to baffle the Colonels while the offense did not waste any time getting on the board. Hannah Schwarz led off the bottom of the first by reaching base and advancing to second on an error by the pitcher. Redman followed with a bunt single to move Schwarz over to third and put runners on the corners.
Jeter followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw while both Schwarz and Redman came around to score on an error by the Nicholls catcher to make it 2-0 after the opening inning.
In the sixth inning, the Islanders made it 6-0 after adding four runs on five hits and one Colonel error. Redman led off the inning with a single and then scored on a Jeter double to left field. Jeter advanced to third on a McKinney groundout and came home when Hurdt hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot down the left field line to make it 5-0 with just one out.
Tucker followed up the homer with a double to right center field and had Panter come on to pinch run for her. Following a Dodson walk, Sandy Schumann finished off the scoring with a single through the left side to score Panter from second and make it 6-0 in favor of the Islanders.
Redman and Hurdt each collected two hits in the second game while Hurdt led the team with two RBI. Jeter and Schumann each added one hit and one RBI while Tucker had the only other hit for TAMUCC.
The Islanders will be looking for the sweep on Sunday when they finish off the series a single game against the Colonels starting at 11 AM at Chapman Field. Live stats and video will be available by visiting www.GoIslanders.com.
