ISLANDERS USE BIG INNING TO TAKE DOWN HOUSTON BAPTIST
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team picked up its eighth win of the season by beating the Houston Baptist Huskies 6-2 in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Invitational on Thursday afternoon.
The Islanders improve to 8-3 on the season, their best 11-game start since going 10-1 to begin the 2005 season. The Huskies fall to 3-3 on the year. Elena Crabtree improved to 5-0 on the season after ptching 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits. She walked none and struck out eight Huskies batters.
Caley Jeter had the big day for the Islanders, going 1-3 with three RBI. Lauren Sanders, Meagan McKinney and Cassie Redman each drove in a run for TAMUCC.
The Islanders struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, getting on-base courtesy of a hit-by-pitch three times, including McKinney who drove in the run after being plunked with the bases loaded.
The Huskies took the lead in the third inning after a pair of singles put runners at first and second and a wind-aided double got away from left fielder Hannah Schwarz on a double to score both runners and put HBU up 2-1 after three innings.
After a scoreless top of the fourth, the Islanders put up five runs in the bottom half to take control of what had been a close game. With two outs and a runner on first, Lauren Dodson singled to left field, followed by a Redman RBI double to score Margo Hurdt. After a Schwarz bunt single to load the bases once again, Sanders singled home Dodson to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the Islanders. Jeter capped off the scoring with a three-run double to left center to make it a 6-2 score.
The Islanders continue the tournament against North Dakota at 2 PM followed by UL Monroe at 4 PM. The Invitational starts up at 10 AM between Houston Baptist and UL Monroe and continues throughout the day.
