The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team took a while to get going but poured it on in another explosive fourth inning to win a 14-2 final over Southern (La.) in the final game of the Islander Classic.
The Islanders are now 7-3 on the season after going a perfect 5-0 in the first of their home tournaments. The Jaguars fell to 0-6 on the season and finishes 0-4 in the tournament. Addie Tallman picked up the victory to move to 3-2 on the season.
Landry Moore did the bulk of the damage for the Islanders in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with six RBIs that came on a grand slam and a two-run homer. The six RBI are the most since former Islander Kim Connelly had a three home run game against Prairie View A&M on April 8, 2008. Sandy Schumann also hit her second home run in as many days, a two-run shot to make it 12-2 and put the mercy rule into effect. Alaina Byars also hit her first home run of the season after hitting a team high six last season.
The first two and a half innings saw no scoring before the Islanders got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With one out on the board, Moore drew a walk to put the first runner on base. Melissa Casey came in to pinch run for the Islanders and quickly stole second base and advanced to third on an error to move into scoring position. Kyrie Panter picked up her first hit and RBI as an Islander when she picked up a bunt single that brought Casey home. Panter proceeded to steal second ahead of a Hannah Schwarz single that would score her to make it 2-0 TAMUCC.
The Jaguars answered right back in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs of their own off of Addie Tallman, who came into the game in relief of starting pitcher Margo Hurdt.
Headed to the bottom half of the inning tied at 2-2, the Islanders once again did double-digit damage in the fourth inning against Southern. Meagan McKinney started the inning by drawing a free pass and moved to second when Kacie Smith put down a bunt single. Schumann singled in McKinney for the first run of the inning and was followed by a Lauren Dodson single to load the bases.
That brought up Moore who hit a 2-1 pitch over the left center field fence just under the scoreboard to make it 9-2 in favor of TAMUCC. After a pair of outs, the Islanders turned the offense back on, scoring five more runs on seven-straight hits in the inning, including the homers by Byars and Schumann.
Tallman came back out to quickly retire three Southern batters and ended the game after five innings by a 14-2 final score. Moore, Smith, Schumann and Dodson each picked up a pair of hits in the game while Moore had six RBI and Schumann finished with two. Panter, Smith, Byars and Schwarz each picked up one RBI.
After a perfect 5-0 weekend, the Islanders return to action on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M. Game time is set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM with live stats and video available on www.GoIslanders.com.
