SOFTBALL TRAVELS TO A&M-KINGSVILLE TO BEGIN FALL SCHEDULE

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will kick off its fall schedule this weekend as they travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a pair of scrimmages on Saturday afternoon. The games will be played in a double header format with the first starting at 1 PM and the second starting at 3 PM.

"We're going to go down there and try to score some runs and play some defense," said head coach Jake Schumann. "It is basically just a 'show me' game so we want game speed intensity but at the same time we know that we are going to go out there and make some mistakes because we haven't practiced everything."

It will be the first time this fall that the team is able to get on the field against outside competition and see how they fare against opposing players. Up to this point, the Islanders have only been able to intra-squad against one another and have not been able to test themselves against opponents in live game action.

"We are not necessarily looking for our kids to be in middle of the spring mode but to go out there and put forth an effort that we have been working hard on the last 10 days," said Schumann. "We are just going to go out there and evaluate what we need to work on.

"All we have been doing is fundamental stuff so that should take care of itself and then we'll come back and work on the things we need to work on as far as game ops go."

This weekend is the first of three series' that the Islanders have against outside competition. Next weekend on October 10th, TAMUCC hosts St. Mary's in a double header starting at 1 PM. The team finishes the schedule on October 24 against Texas A&M International at Chapman Field with games also set to start at 1 PM.

"It gives them an opportunity to do something different because our pitchers know how to get our hitters out and our hitters know what to expect," said Schumann. "It is hard to tell who has the upper hand so when you get out and face a quality division II program like TAMU-Kingsville, St. Mary's or TAMU-International, it gives you a good indicator of where you need to go."
