Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball player Brittany Tucker was recently awarded one of the highest honors as she was named one of the 10 recipients of the 2009 Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year award.

The award is given annually by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Diamond Sports, the manufacturer designated as the NFCA's "Official Protective Equipment" sponsor. One member of each division of the NCAA (I,II,III), NAIA, NJCAA (I,II,III), Cal JC, Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) as well as one for the high school level receive the honor yearly.

"I've been saying it since I started recruiting her a year and a half ago that she was one of the best catchers in the country," said head coach Jake Schumann. "Obviously I was not the only one that thought that."

Tucker is a junior from Tucson, Ariz. who signed with the Islanders last fall and started her first year in the program this fall. Before that, she was a team leader at Yavapai College where she helped carry her team to the 2009 NJCAA Softball National Championship.

In the championship game, Tucker hit a two-run home run that turned out to be the game winning hit. For her efforts, Tucker was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

She finished the season hitting .401 with 77 RBI and 51 runs scored on 20 home runs, 12 doubles and two triples. Tucker was also named a First Team NJCAA All-American for the second straight year.

Tucker makes up part of the most recent Islander recruiting class that Schumann brought it to help take the Islanders to the next level and compete for a Southland Conference title.

"She put up the numbers and deserved this honor," said Schumann. "We are happy to have her, on paper she is a great player and we are just going to see what she brings to our program."

Tucker and the Islanders have will start fall practice at the end of the month and will compete in six games on their fall schedule, two each against Texas A&M-Kingsville, St. Mary's and Texas A&M International during the month of October.
