Arlington – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team split a pair of Southland Conference games with UT Arlington on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 8-1 before falling in the second by a 9-1 final in five innings. The Islanders took two-of-three games to win the series with the Lady Mavs.

The split moves the Islanders to 18-29 on the season and 9-14 in SLC games. The Lady Mavs move to 21-21 overall on the year and 15-12 in SLC action. Addie Tallman started both games for TAMUCC, taking both decisions to move her record to 15-14.

In the early game of the day, the Islanders opened with a single run in the top of the first to take an early lead. With one out in the inning, Larissa Martin reached on a single and advanced to second base when Stephanie Estrada drew a walk. After the second out was recorded, Margo Hurdt came through with an RBI-single to score Martin from second base to make it 1-0 in favor of TAMUCC.

The Islanders added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Cassie Redman led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop following the first out. Martin then reached base on a hit-by-pitch and Estrada walked to load the bases. Alaina Byars came through with a sacrifice fly to left field to extend the lead to 2-0 Islanders.

Following a single run in the bottom of the fifth that cut the lead to 2-1, TAMUCC responded with four runs in the top of the sixth. Landry Moore hit her first homerun of the season when she hit a shot to left field, making it 3-1. Sandy Schumann and Redman followed with back-to-back doubles to centerfield to put runners on first and second. Lauren Sanders then laid down a bunt single to score Schumann and advance Redman to third base. Martin then grounded out to second to move Sanders over to second, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Estrada. Estrada came through with a two-RBI single to score Redman and Sanders and stretch the lead to 6-1.

The Islanders finished off the scoring in the top of the seventh with two runs. Hurdt opened the inning by reaching on an error and was brought home when Andrea Simancas hit her second home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 8-1.

Hurdt and Redman each had a pair of hits while Estrada and Simancas had two RBI apiece. Sanders, Martin, Estrada, Simancas, Moore and Schumann each had one hit. Sanders, Byars, Hurdt and Moore had RBI apiece.

Tallman pitched all seven innings, giving up just one run on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

"The first game was really good, it was fun to watch," said head coach Jake Schumann. "The second game was more difficult."

In the second game of the day, the Islanders were unable to keep the momentum going, as they fell behind early and were never able to recover. The Lady Mavs score two runs in the first inning, three in the second, two runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 9-1 advantage.

"Addie pitched well out there today," said Schumann. "She just got a little tired and left some pitches out over the plate."

The Islanders lone run in the game came on a Hurdt homerun to lead off the second inning, her fourth of the year.

Estrada, Byars, Hurdt, Schumann and Kim Connelly had one hit apiece for TAMUCC. The lone RBI came on Hurdt's homer. Tallman started the game and went one-plus inning, giving up four runs on four hits to take the loss. Hurdt pitched 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one. Morgan Seals came on to finish the game, pitching 1.2 innings while giving up two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out three.

"It was a good weekend for us on the field," said Schumann. "I just wish we would have been able to get the sweep."

The Islanders are next in action on Wednesday, April 22 as they travel to Houston Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader. Following the mid-week games, the Islanders return home for their final home series of the season.
