ISLANDERS TRAVEL TO AUSTIN TO FACE LONGHORNS
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will travel to Austin on Thursday, taking a break from Southland Conference action to face the #22 Texas Longhorns in a doubleheader of return games after the two teams previously played on March 5 at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
The Islanders split those games with the Longhorns, winning the first by a 5-0 score to become the first team of the 2009 season to shutout Texas while falling in the second game by a 9-8 score with the tying run on second base when the final out was recorded.
The Islanders will look to put on a similar performance tomorrow, as they will be playing their first Top 25 team of the season. Texas broke into the national polls this week on the strength of their doubleheader sweep of then #6 Oklahoma. They are #22 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and #25 in the USA Today/NFCA poll. On Wednesday night, the Longhorns defeated #19 Texas A&M by a 5-3 final.
In the first pair of meetings between the teams this season, the Islanders used a strong pitching performance by Addie Tallman to shut down the Longhorns in the first game of the day, winning by a 5-0 margin on the strength of Margo Hurdt's 2-for-3 performance at the plate to go along with three RBI. Alaina Byars and Andrea Simancas also contributed an RBI apiece in the game.
In game two of the twinbill, the Islanders fell behind early, giving up four runs in the first with two of them being unearned to fall behind 4-0. The Islanders gave up six unearned runs that game while falling by just one at 9-8. Cassie Redman led the Islanders at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance while knocking in two RBI. Stephanie Estrada, Byar, Simancas and Landry Moore also contributed one RBI each in the game.
Byars has been on a tear recently, hitting six homeruns and knocking in 17 RBI over the last 13 games while maintaining a .349 average over that span. Hurdt has also done well, bringing in 10 RBI while playing in 12 of the games.
