Huntsville The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team got a much-needed win on Sunday afternoon, taking a 3-1 final over Sam Houston State in the final game of a Southland Conference road series.
The Islanders improve to 14-25 on the season overall with a record of 5-12 in SLC games. The Bearkats move to 14-15 in all games and 7-8 in SLC contests. Addie Tallman started for the Islanders and went the entire way, giving up one run on six hits and one walk to improve to 11-10 on the season.
The Islanders did most of their damage early on, scoring what would turn out to be the game winning runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the first inning, Stephanie Estrada produced an infield single to the third baseman to reach base. Alaina Byars then followed with a single to put a pair of runners on for Margo Hurdt. Hurdt came to the plate and hit a double to score both Estrada and Byars to give TAMUCC an early 2-0 lead.
"We came out flying today, getting two runs on three hits today," said head coach Jake Schumann. "We made adjustments from yesterday and were able to hit some balls hard and push some runs across."
Tallman would make that lead hold up, as she allowed just one Sam Houston run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 2-1 Islanders. TAMUCC responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as Andrea Simancas led off the inning with a single. Simancas proceeded to steal second base to get into scoring position. After Kim Connelly came to the plate and reached on an error, Sandy Schumann put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third. Alejia Cain followed with a single to load the bases ahead of a sacrifice fly by Landry Moore to centerfield, scoring Simancas from third base.
The bottom half of the inning provided some tense times for the Islanders, as they allowed runners to reach second and third with two outs in the inning, but Tallman came through by inducing a groundout to the pitcher for the final out of the game.
"This was a good team win," said Schumann. "We played good defense, Addie pitched awesome and we got some clutch hits when we needed them today."
Offensively for the Islanders, Andrea Simancas was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with a run scored. Larissa Martin, Estrada, Byars, Hurdt and Cain each had one hit apiece for the Islanders. Hurdt had two RBI on the day while Moore recorded one.
The Islanders now take a break from SLC play as they will travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns this coming Thursday. The two teams will play a non-conference doubleheader before TAMUCC returns home to host McNeese State in an SLC series next Saturday and Sunday, April 4th and 5th.
"We're just going to have to take it one game at a time," said Schumann. "We played like our season was on the line today and we will have to continue with that intensity the rest of the year."
