SOFTBALL LOSES FINAL GAME OF SERIES TO TEXAS STATE

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team lost an 8-2 final in Southland Conference play against Texas State at Champman Field. The Islanders went 0-for-3 on the weekend against the Bobcats.

The loss drops the Islanders to 8-18 overall and 0-9 in SLC games. The Bobcats improved to 15-9 overall and 7-2 in SLC action. Addie Tallman started the game and was tagged with the loss to send her record to 5-6.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bobcats scored five unearned runs in the top of the second inning on just two hits, as the Islanders committed two errors and walked three Bobcat batters.

Down 5-0, the Islanders responded with a run in the bottom half of the second inning when Kim Connelly doubled to center field and advanced to third on an Andrea Simancas ground out. Landry Moore hit a sharp single off the pitchers glove to bring Connelly in and get the Islanders on the board.

The Islanders pushed another run across in the bottom of the sixth when Alaina Byars led off with a double to center field. Melissa Casey came on to pinch run for Byars and moved over to third on a wild pitch. Margo Hurdt grounded out to score Casey and pull the Islanders to within 5-2.

The Bobcats responded with three runs in the top half of the seventh to extend their lead. They were allowed three runs on just one hit and three walks. The Islanders were unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh and lost by an 8-2 final.

Stephanie Estrada, Byars, Connelly and Moore each had one hit for the Islanders with Byars and Connelly collecting doubles. Hurdt and Moore each had one RBI for TAMUCC. Tallman started the game and pitched a combined one and one-third innings, giving up six runs, only one of them earned, on one hit and four walks. Stacie Tassin pitched five innings of relief, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits and five walks with one strikeout. Morgan Seals pitched the last two-thirds of the top of the seventh and sat down the two batters she faced.

The Islanders return to action next Saturday against Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. for an SLC road series. The two teams will play a double header starting at 1 PM on Saturday and a single game starting at 12 PM on Sunday.
