The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped a pair of Southland Conference games to the Texas state Bobcats by scores of 8-1 and 9-3 at Chapman Field.
The Islanders fall to 8-17 and 0-8 in the SLC on the season. The Bobcats improved to 14-9 overall and 6-2 in SLC play. Addie Tallman started game one for the Islanders and took the loss to fall to 5-5 on the season. Game two saw Stacie Tassin tagged with the loss to fall to 3-11 on the year.
In the opening game, the Islanders fell 8-1 as the visiting Bobcats pounded out 10 hits and drew nine base on balls.
Leading 2-0, Texas State scored four times in the third to break open the game and take a 6-0 lead. The Islanders had two errors in the inning as the Bobcats plated three unearned runs off TAMUCC starter Addie Tallman.
The Islanders finally broke through for a run in the fifth. With one out, Cassie Redman walked and Lauren Sanders reached for the second time in the game on a throwing error. Redman scored on a grounder by Larissa Martin.
Texas State would add single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring. Chandler Hall earned the win for the Bobcats pitching five innings of two-hit baseball. She struck out three and walked two. Elizabeth Dennis pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Martin and Margo Hurdt each recorded a hit for the Islanders with Martin recording the only RBI.
In game two, the Islanders fell behind by a 5-1 score after three and one-half innings, but the Islanders responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tighten the game at 5-3. Stephanie Estrada reached on an error by the pitcher to start the inning. Alaina Byars followed with a double down the left field line and advanced to third while scoring Estrada on the play. Hurdt followed with a single to score Byars and close the gap to 5-3.
TAMUCC was unable to get any closer however, as the Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to push the final to 9-3. Redman and Byars led the Islanders in hitting on the game as they each recorded two hits and one RBI. Hurdt had one hit and an RBI while Sanders, Estrada and Andrea Simancas each had one hit for the Islanders.
The Islanders finish the series with the Bobcats with a 1 PM first pitch on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Field.
