ISLANDERS HOST LONGHORNS IN HISTORIC MATCHUP

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will host Texas on Thursday afternoon in the first-ever home games for the Islanders against the Longhorns. The two teams will play a double-header starting at 3 p.m. at Cabaniss Field.

The Islanders come into the game with a 7-14 record and are looking to rebound from a rough start in conference play. The Longhorns are now 15-4 on the season as they defeated Texas State by a 4-2 score on Tuesday night.

The games at Cabaniss Field will mark the first time the Islanders have hosted the Longhorns in Corpus Christi. The two teams have previously met 16 times either in Austin or at a neutral site, with the Islanders going 1-15 in those matchups with several close calls, including five one-run losses and and a pair of two-run losses.

The Islanders have struggled of late but have played a tough schedule to this point of the season. They have beaten several quality teams, including Creighton, Indiana State, Loyola-Chicago and Dayton in their two tournaments they have hosted this season, the Corpus Christi Invitational and the Islander Invitational. They started the season at the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla., a tournament featuring teams from the SEC, ACC, Big East and Sun Belt conferences.

The Longhorns have gotten off to a fast start but the Islanders have proven to be a formidable opponent over the years against Texas. There have been several close calls between the two teams, with the Islanders coming up just short. Last season, Texas took two games by 10-2 and 8-0 finals in Coach Jake Schumann's first year on the job.

All area fans are encouraged to come out and support the Islanders in this historic event for the softball program. The game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and tickets are available by calling the Islander Ticket Office at 825-BALL(2255) or at the gate. Ticket prices for the game will be $7 for reserved seating and $5 for general admission.
