The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team lost a tough game against the North Texas Mean Green by a 4-3 score on the first day of the Corpus Christi Invitational. The Islanders played in the final game of the day at the tournament. Other scores were Indiana State over Creighton 4-3, Creighton over Detroit Mercy 8-0 in five innings and Indiana State over Detroit Mercy by a 6-5 score.
The Islanders are now 2-6 on the year while the Mean Green played their first game and are now 1-0. Stacie Tassin started the game for the Islanders and was tagged with the loss to go to 1-4.
In the first inning, the Mean Green put two runs on the board when the leadoff hitter Marissa Martinez doubled to left field and then stole third base. Megan Rupp followed with a walk and then stole second base. Mallory Cantler reached on a fielder's choice to advance Rupp to third and score Martinez, making it 1-0. Lisa Johnson grounded out, scoring Rupp to make it 2-0 before the inning was over.
"We lost the game in the first inning today." said Head Coach Jake Schumann. "We didn't come out ready to play from the first pitch and it took us awhile to get going offensively."
UNT added to their lead in the fourth when Lyndi Samuelson walked and stole second base. Kadie Platt singled and advanced to second while Samuelson advanced to third base. Samuelson scored on a wild pitch while Platt advanced to third. Platt then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0 Mean Green.
"This is a good hitting team that will win some games against big teams this year." said Schumann. "We can't get behind teams and have to dig ourselves out of an early hole."
The Islanders would not go quietly however, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one run. With two outs in the inning, the Islanders rally started with a Cassie Redman single and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman. Lauren Sanders walked to put runners on first and second. Larissa Martin singled to left field and advanced to second, scoring Redman and advancing Sanders to third. Margo Hurdt followed with a triple to center field, scoring Sanders and Martin to put the score at 4-3.
The Islanders were unable to push across any more runs and fell 4-3. Redman, Martin and Hurdt each had one hit for the Islanders. Hurdt led with two RBIs while Martin added one.
The Islanders are back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Creighton at 1 PM and following that up with a 3 PM game against Indiana State.
"Creighton is a good test for us early on, we need to get a good nights' rest and come back ready to play well tomorrow." said Schumann. "We need to get two wins tomorrow."
The schedule for tomorrow is North Texas vs. Detroit Mercy at 9 AM, North Texas vs. Creighton at 11 AM, TAMUCC vs. Creighton at 1 PM and TAMUCC vs. Indiana State at 3 PM.
