CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams have each earned a No. 4 seed in the Baylor Regional and will take on host Baylor in the upcoming men's and women's NCAA Team Championships at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
Dates and times for both matches will be announced in the coming days.
A&M - Corpus Christi is one of only 11 universities to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament for both men's and women's teams this year. The Islanders are also one of only three programs nationwide to have one coach coaching both teams.
"We're very proud to be taking two teams to the NCAA Championships," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "It means the world to us to see these special seniors get to go. This school and this community are very special to us, so it means the world to us to see the name of this great university and city in the NCAA national draw for both men and women. It's a proud day to be an Islander.
"We have tremendous respect for Baylor. Obviously they are a perennial top-10 program in men and women year in and year out. We will approach this with the same mentality like we always have, not focus on results or outcome, but rather focus on the things we can control, competing for each point separately like a warrior, and maxing out on the things we can control, like effort, energy and team spirit. That is who we are and it never changes, regardless of where we go or who we play. I can tell you there's a lot of teams who work hard and deserve it, but none more than these Islanders players. To say I believe in them is an understatement. They are the highest-character kids a coach could ever dream of having. I believe in them with all of my heart. I can't wait for the chance to compete with these amazing high-character kids at the NCAAs."
The men's team (19-9, 6-0 SLC) will make its fifth appearance in the NCAAs in the last seven years and its second consecutive trip. The Islanders will face the Big 12 Champions and overall No. 5 seed Bears (23-5, 4-1 Big 12).
The Islanders women's team (22-5, 11-1 SLC) will make its first NCAA appearance in Islanders history after notching a program-best 22 wins and winning its first ever Southland Conference Tournament Championship. The Islanders will battle the No. 14 overall seed Lady Bears (24-6, 10-0 Big 12), who won the Big 12 Championship.
The Islanders men's and women's tennis teams both punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament after clinching the Southland Conference Championships on Sunday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The men's team is on a seven-match winning streak and will return to the NCAA Championships after locking a No. 3 seed last season. The Islanders faced a tough Texas Longhorn team in the opening round last season in the College Station Regional. The last time the Islanders were a No. 4 seed was in 2011 when they faced the Bears in the Baylor Regional. The men's team dropped a 4-1 loss in the opening round.
The Islanders women's team will take on the Lady Bears for the first time in program history. The Islanders are also on a seven-match winning streak and have won 16 of their last 17 matches.
