BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team earned their second Southland Conference victory of the season, 6-1, over Lamar (12-10, 1-2 SLC) today at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The Islanders picked up six straight-set singles victories to improve to 13-9 on the year and 2-0 in Southland play.
"I thought the guys did a great job in the doubles of controlling the things they could control, playing with great energy and passion," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I thought the singles was somewhat mixed. For these guys to reach their goals this year, we simply have to get better with playing each point with intensity and maintaining champions' posture at all times. We fought hard. We were fortunate that we got a windy day.
"This Lamar team is a very good team and they are having a very good season. Coach Shankles has brought in some very good young players. This is a team that we have a lot of respect for and a team that we expect to see again. We have two home matches coming up, so we have to be ready for every guy to max out with great attitude and great effort every point, no exceptions."
A&M - Corpus Christi gained momentum early to garner the doubles point with wins on courts two and three over the Cardinals. For the first time this season, Javier Pujol and Ricardo Mayagoitia teamed up to take an 8-1 victory over Trey Crysel and Carl-Philip Lindqvis in No. 3 doubles. The Islanders then secured the doubles point after the duo of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook topped Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Juuso Laitinen, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles. In the final doubles match on court one, the pair of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo were ahead 7-3 over Nikita Lis and Mikko Rajamaki when the point was clinched.
The Islanders kept the positive energy going to build an early 2-0 lead. Cook started things off with his fourth win of the season in No. 6 singles. The freshman cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set victory over Crysel to improve to 2-0 in Southland play.
Lamar answered with a win in No. 5 singles after Hoogenboezem defeated Rauseo, 6-2, 6-3. However, the Islanders wouldn't allow the Cardinals any more points as they went on to garner the final four singles match to win. Nagy started the run with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lis in the No. 1 slot to win his 14th victory of the season in No. 1 singles. The junior has won his last two matches to improve to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Pujol followed Nagy's lead with a sweeping 6-0 first-set victory over Lindqvis in No. 3 singles. The sophomore then clinched the match for the Islanders with a 6-3 second-set win. It marked his first win of the season in the No. 3 position and his second conference win.
Westmoreland then secured his second straight singles win and first in the No. 4 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Rajamaki. The Islanders captured their sixth and final point of the day after Mayagoitia registered his 10th singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Laitinen at No. 2 singles. The sophomore is now 10-6 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.
The Islanders men's team has lost just one regular-season Southland Conference match in the last eight years since Coach Moore returned to take over the men's team in 2007. A&M - Corpus Christi will look to keep that winning streak alive when they continue Southland Conference play with a two-match homestand at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Islanders will host first-year member Incarnate Word on Thursday, April 10, before facing Nicholls on Friday, April 11.
