Rice Trips Up Men’s Tennis, 4-0, at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's tennis team suffered a tough loss today, falling 4-0 to Rice in the opening match of the 56th Annual Rice Invitational presented by the Wyndham Houston-Medical Center. The Owls garnered a tight doubles point before winning three singles matches to secure the match at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.

"Give Rice credit," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They were very tough at home today. They are a class team and they were just too tough today on their home court. I thought we played great at No. 1 doubles, and we definitely had our chances for the doubles point. I thought Peter and Ricky were playing very high-level competitive singles matches. We just have to keep getting better each week at the things that determine succeeding in late April and May."

Rice (6-9) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning two out of the three doubles matches on courts two and three. The Islanders (11-7) looked very strong at No. 1 doubles with junior Peter Nagy and sophomore Guillaume Rauseo garnering an 8-5 victory over Srikar Alla and Leif Berger. However, Tommy Bennett and David Warren answered with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 spot over the senior-freshman duo of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook. The Owls then earned the doubles point after Adam Gustafsson and Max Andrews topped Islanders Ricardo Mayagoitia and Philip Kuehnen, 8-5, in the No. 3 slot.

In singles action, Rauseo absorbed a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Gustafsson in the No. 3 position before Kuehnen saw his three-match winning streak come to an end with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Gustavo Gonzalez in No. 6 singles. The match was closed out in the No. 4 slot when Javier Pujol fell 6-2, 6-3 to Andrews.

In No. 1 singles, Nagy was battling Bennett after dropping a close 7-5 first set, and Mayagoitia was going neck-and-neck with Alla in the No. 2 slot. The two were even at 6-6 in the first set when the match was clinched. In the final singles match on court five, Westmoreland dropped a 6-3 first-set loss to Warren and was trailing 2-0 in the second set.

The Islanders will continue play in Houston against No. 67 Tulane on Saturday, March 22, at 12 p.m.
